algorithms – survival of the fittest

I’ve been volunteering with a FIRST robotics high school team as a programming mentor. Due to a “series of unfortunate events”, we didn’t get to test our logic to drive straight in autonomous mode until the night the robot went into the crate.
We wound up using an interesting approach. First we brainstormed options and prioritized [...]

another reason % of time writing tests is meaningless

Earlier in the month, I blogged a response to – “What would you say is the average percentage of development time devoted to creating the unit test scripts?”. As I was telling a friend about it, I realized that I missed an important point!
The question also implies that development time is constant. Or maybe not. [...]

a response to – “What would you say is the average percentage of development time devoted to creating the unit test scripts?”

How long does it take to compile? We don’t ask that. It would be absurd. The fact that people ask how long unit testing takes mean they see it as an optional cost to be incurred. What I want to know is why they don’t ask for a similar accounting of the cost of NOT [...]

Refactoring JUnit 3.8 to 4.0 when hierarchy extends TestCase

Problem:
I want to start writing tests in JUnit 4.0, but I have a lot of tests in JUnit 3.8. I can’t just start writing tests in 4.0, because I rely on common setup/assertions in my custom superclass which extends TestCase. (Which means JUnit will only look for 3.8 style tests)
Solution:
Create one or more new [...]

Where’s the Flex Plug-in for Eclipse 3.5?

Over 7 months after Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) was released, Adobe still has not released an update for its popular Flex Builder 3 plug-in that would make it compatible with the most recent version of Eclipse. Those of us who rely on the plug-in for Flex/Air development are still stuck using Eclipse 3.4 (Ganymede), [...]

javaranch forums go mobile

Want to know what went on behind the scenes of JavaRanch’s mobile site creation?
Timeline

January 2009 – We started talking about how poorly the site renders on a BlackBerry
July 2009 – I got a BlackBerry for work. And ugh. The forums do look horrible.
August 2009 – Tried out BlackBerry emulator and explored the minimalistic approach possible [...]

how to test a local web application in droid simulator

In August, I blogged about how to use the blackberry simulator because information was so scarce. I’m happy to say the Android emulator documentation is much better.
My goal
About a month ago, beta testers of JavaRanch’s JForum implementation told me the iPhone and the Droid had a large blank column on the right side of the [...]
