As a novice user, I understood I should wait for Lion to get the bugs out. I thought I was just a grandma that didn't want to change: I keep 2004 Word on every machine I have. Will the documents be gone too, or just the ability to use the application on new docs?

I got Lion for free since my computer was so new. So far, I've noticed a few annoying things or bugs (keyboard backlighting stays on, various preferences gone - seemingly at random).

I am in fear of the Lion! I too have office 04 and don't want to lose access to my docs. However, I am a very simple user of the office, I don't get into complicated macros etc so if I upgrade to office 08, will I have access to my docs, after downloading Lion? I can probably get by with learning the newer version, I just don't want to lose access to my docs!

I have continued to experience problems with iChat saving my passwords. Each time I switch from offline to available, I am prompted for my password(s) again. I tried the process described about (7.22 update); it worked after I restarted, but afterwards it went back to asking for my password again. Very frustrated and would appreciate any further advice.

Scott - thanks for the report. Appreciate the effort you put into it. I purposely waited to get people's impressions and thus I'm planning to live with Snow Leopard since I really enjoy working with Office 2004.

@Peets

True, Office 2008 didn't have the ribbon, but if you'll recall the feature set of that version was significantly reduced.

From Wikipedia, "Office 2008 for Mac lacks feature parity with the Windows version. The lack of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) support in Excel makes it impossible to use macros programmed in VBA. Microsoft's response is that adding VBA support in Xcode would have resulted in an additional two years added to the development cycle of Office 2008"

In short, Office 2004 had more features than 2008, and no ribbon, making it the best to date.

Umm - you have one version of Office left before the dreaded ribbon makes its entry. Office 2008 didn't have it either, which is why I bought it a year ago (not willingly, but as long as I have clients who fall for the file format and the "it doesn't look 100% the same" trap I'm stuck with it). Th problem was that Microsoft soon noticed that people were jumping to OSX to avoid the downgrade to the ribbon interface, so that "problem " has been corrected. Buy the 2008 version - it works on Lion (I've tried). Or better, install one of the many OpenOffice derivatives (OOo, LibreOffice, NeoOffice) and save the money for something more useful, such as Lion server :-).
